ok this started out as a revision to an earlier piece that I moved to scraps. I took the head of the afro girl from that earlier work and changed her pose. I wanted to try a different style of coloring - a more cel shaded anime style. I don't know all the rules to cel-shading tho so I was just going off memory. I kinda like how it turned out. I kept thinking about Charlie's Angels when i came up with the other two ladies there..but obviously these gals are a little more funky. I wish I would have done a more dynamic angle cuz I think i need to work on that. I am, however, planning on revisiting these gals individually with more dynamic angles/poses and maybe another group piece.
Now this is the funk. I totally dig the redo of her face and the crackling bolts really set it off. Nice energy in the poses and the girl with the pink pigtails seems fun. Great work on this one!
*nods* yeah, the girl in the middle, something just doesn't look right to me....I guess the positioning of the legs? I'm thinking that the legs for her could be longer.....But *shrugs* maybe it'll grow on me as I stare at it some more. As always, your coloring is really inspiring and unique. I like how you construct the form and shading for your pieces...no matter what the style. Where did you learn how to color in Photoshop? Any inspirations that you studied to get the look you want?
Sorry for the long comment.... But dude, you got my respect with your artwork. Mos def!

thanks, bro. Yeah there is something wrong with her positioning but it would be hard to fix it at this point. I should have taken my time with the line art but I made so many revisions during this piece.
pretty much self taught with Photoshop. I've recieved a lot of advice/suggestions from this guy [link] . I'm not really sure I achieved the look I want...i just looked at how the anime on Cartoon Network were colored - Naruto, Trinity, Bleach, Ghost in the Shell etc.
*nods* Understandable about not havin' the ability to fix the lineart. Once it's done, it's done, and there's no turning back. I had my moments as well. Self taught huh? Well that's good. Can't really get enough time in the world to do that (unless the world freezes over and I don't get bothered. ) And cool with the inspiration for the coloring! I'll look into that sometime soon.....hopefully. I'm also hoping that the art degree classes will go over digital art as well. Cuz that's pretty much the future as far as illustration is concerned.

Indeed the industry does seem to be using digital tools more and more. There are a lot of cartoons (US cartoon) that have that Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Flash vector art kinda look. I know for a fact Flash is being used in a lot commericals like those e-surance ads. But these digital tools can still be used to create more traditional looking art.
*nods* Exactly (weird that I have been beginning my comments with a nod for this subject).....Not just cartoons, but as you see with all these pictures and commissions....Very interesting. Oh, I have a Wacom Intuos too....any tips to practicing some specifics on that thing? I know I need to practice some more to get it more accurate like with my traditional art. And with my coloring too...that's definitely first priority.

i just draw on it like i would a pencil..no special techniques yet. When i sketch a picture I set the Opacity to like 35 and use a blue color. When i do the line art i push the opacity up to about 50. Sometimes I go up to 80. It can vary.
